Taxonomy
Macroolithus mutabilis was named by Mikhailov (1994). It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type specimen is PIN 4477/5, an egg, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Ikh-Shunkht (SMPE), which is in a Campanian/Campanian terrestrial horizon in the Baruungoyot Formation of Mongolia.

K. E. Mikhailov 1994Thick eggshell: predominant range of thickness (in equatorial region) 1.5-1.8 mm; total range 1.3-2.0 mm (with elements of sculpture up to 2.3 mm). Pore canals having large funnels. Fragments characteristically having "aberrational" surface (approximately three fragments) without sculpture and with slitlike pore canals.
