Glyptophiceras was named by Spath (1930). Its type is Xenodiscus aequicostatus.
It was assigned to Ophioceratidae by Spath (1930); to Ophiceratidae by Spath (1934), Nakazawa and Shimizu (1955) and Kapoor and Bando (1974); to Xenodiscidae by Tozer (1981) and Tozer (1994); and to Xenoceltitidae by Brühwiler and Bucher (2012) and Smyshlyaeva and Zakharov (2021).
