Gansus was named by Hou and Liu (1984). Its type is Gansus yumenensis.
It was assigned to Ornithurae by Hope (2002) and You et al. (2006); to Euornithes by Cau and Arduini (2008); to Pygostylia by Lefevre et al. (2014); to Gansuidae by Hou and Liu (1984), Hou (1997) and Liu et al. (2014); and to Ornithuromorpha by O'Connor and Zelenkov (2013), Wang et al. (2014), Wang et al. (2014), O'Connor et al. (2014) and Wang and Liu (2015).
