Pecten (Chlamys) coccymelus was named by Dall (1898).

It was recombined as Chesapecten (Chesapecten) coccymelus by Ward (1992); it was recombined as Chesapecten coccymelus by Ward and Blackwelder (1975), Gibson (1987) and Ward (1998).
