Murex macgintyi was named by Smith (1938). Its type locality is TU 520 - Brighton (unnamed formation), which is in a Pleistocene coastal horizon in Florida.
It was recombined as Murexiella (Murexiella) macgintyi by Vokes (1968); it was recombined as Murexiella macgintyi by Ward and Blackwelder (1987).
