Hyperstrophema was named by Horný (1964) [Sepkoski's age data: D Eife Sepkoski's reference number: 362]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Hyperstropheminae.

It was assigned to Onychochilidae by Linsley and Kier (1984); to Hyperstrophina by Sepkoski (2002); and to Hyperstropheminae by Horný (1964) and Bouchet et al. (2005).
