Neurankylus baueri

Reptilia - Baenidae

Taxonomy
Neurankylus baueri was named by Gilmore (1916). Its type specimen is USNM 8344, a shell (a complete shell), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Ojo Alamo-Hunter (USNM), which is in a Campanian terrestrial horizon in the Kirtland Formation of New Mexico.

It was synonymized subjectively with Neurankylus eximius by Gaffney (1972).

Synonyms
  • Neurankylus hutchisoni was named by Lively (2016). Its type specimen is UCMP 154450, a partial skeleton (A carapace and plastron missing approximately one-third of the right side, two cervical vertebrate, two sacral vertebrae, two caudal vertebrae, both scapulae, r), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is UCMP V93118 (Grand Staircase - Escalante National Monument), which is in a Campanian fluvial horizon in the Kaiparowits Formation of Utah.

It was synonymized subjectively with Neurankylus baueri by Lichtig and Lucas (2018).
  • Neurankylus utahensis was named by Lively (2016) [Distinguished from other species of Neurankylus based on a unique combination of characters including: a carapace length up to 82 cm, longer than Neurankylus eximius and Neurankylus baueri, but shorter than Neurankylus hutchisoni; a mid-dorsal keel is present posteriorly only, as in Neurankylus hutchisoni and Neurankylus eximius; the posterior margin of the carapace possesses only minor scalloping, differing from the more pronounced scalloping of Neurankylus baueri; the fourth marginal is shaped like an asymmetrical trapezoid, expanding posteriorly as in Neurankylus baueri and Neurankylus lithographicus; the anterior lobe of the plastron is larger than the posterior lobe, as in Neurankylus hutchisoni and differing from all other species of Neurankylus; the anterior margin of the carapace is rounded, as in Neurankylus hutchisoni and Neurankylus sp. from the Hell Creek Formation; the gular-extragular sulci are laterally curved (unique to this taxon) to sigmoidal, as in Neurankylus eximius and Neurankylus sp. from the Hell Creek and Lance formations; the gulars share a wide sulcus with the humerals, as in Neurankylus baueri and Neurankylus lithographicus.]. Its type specimen is UMNH VP 22100, a set of postcrania (A nearly complete carapace and plastron), and it is a 3D body fossil.

Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
R. M. Sullivan et al. 2012Differs from all other species of Neurankylus in having the following combination of characters: gulars well-developed and deep; intergulars Ushaped and in contact with humerals posteriorly (thereby
excluding the gulars from contact across the midline).
W. G. Joyce and T. R. Lyson 2015Neurankylus baueri is currently diagnosed as a baenid by axillary and inguinal buttresses that reach the costals, a lack of epiplastral processes and the presence of well-developed meso- plastra, and as a representative of Neurankylus by its large size, a smooth shell that lacks both anterior and posterior notches, a complete ring of marginals, wide vertebrals, a small undivided cervical that is taller than wide and lack of contact between the extragulars. Neurankylus baueri is currently differentiated from other Neurankylus by a narrow vertebral V, a scalloped posterior edge of the shell, rectangular posterior neural bones and the development of a weak, disrupted median keel on the carapace.
J. R. Lively 2016 (Neurankylus hutchisoni)Neurankylus hutchisoni differs from all other species of Neurankylus by the presence of a high-domed, laterally rounded carapace (whereas all other members of the genus possess a low-domed carapace with relatively parallel lateral margins), 13 marginal scutes, second marginal with a prominent dorsal projection between vertebral I and pleural I, marginal VIII greatly expanded laterally, marginals V XI exceptionally wide, adult midline carapace length approximately 91 cm, ilial shaft robust and sloped posterodorsally, flange present on anterior rim of acetabulum, and an acetabular fossa that faces posteroventrally. Neurankylus hutchisoni is similar to Neurankylus utahensis sp. nov. in the presence of a rounded anterior plastral lobe that is larger than the posterior plastral lobe. A possible autapomorphy for Neurankylus hutchisoni is the presence of mediolaterally compressed trunk vertebrae with prominent ventral keels (Hutchison et al. 2013).
