Matherella was named by Walcott (1912) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Dres-u Cm Trep]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Onychochilinae by Knight et al. (1960); to Onychochilidae by Linsley and Kier (1984); and to Hyperstrophina by Sepkoski (2002).
