Bucanella was named by Meek (1871) [Sepkoski's age data: O Trem-u D Give Sepkoski's reference number: 362]. Its type is Bucanella nana. It is the type genus of Bucaniellinae.
It was corrected as Bucaniella by Fischer (1885) and Pitcher (1939); it was reranked as Plectonotus (Bucaniella) by Clarke (1913).
