Taxonomy
Carinaropsis was named by Hall (1847) [Sepkoski's age data: O Cara-m O Ashg-l Sepkoski's reference number: 797]. Its type is Carinaropsis carinata. It is the type genus of Carinaropsinae, Carinaropsidae.

It was corrected as Carinariopsis by Perner (1903).

It was assigned to Carinaropsidae by Ulrich and Scofield (1897); to Bellerophontidae by Perner (1903); to Bellerophontida by Sloan and Webers (1987) and Sepkoski (2002); and to Carinaropsinae by Knight et al. (1960), Wahlman (1992) and Bouchet et al. (2005).
