Acanthocybium was named by Gill (1862). It is extant.
It was assigned to Scomberoidei by Weems (1999) and Purdy et al. (2001); to Scomberomorini by Klawe (1977) and Collette et al. (2001); to Acanthocybiinae by Starks (1910) and Monsch (2004); and to Scombridae by Jordan and Gilbert (1920) and Carnevale and Godfrey (2018).
