Taxonomy
Colymbus was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant. Its type is Podiceps auritus. It is the type genus of Colymbidae, Colymboidea.
It was assigned to Pygopodes by Shufeldt (1891); to Colymbidae by Hay (1902), Wetmore (1924), Hay (1930), Wetmore (1933), Wetmore (1940), Wetmore (1956) and Miller and Bowman (1958); and to Podicipedidae by Lambrecht (1933) and Howard (1972).
