Gyrospira was named by Boucot (1956) [Sepkoski's age data: D Gedi D Fame Sepkoski's reference number: 362]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Carinaropsinae by Knight et al. (1960), Wahlman (1992); and to Bellerophontida by Sepkoski (2002).
