Taxonomy
Anas bernicla was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant. Its type specimen is 1. It is the type species of Branta.

It was recombined as Branta bernicla by Hay (1902), Hay (1930), Wetmore (1940), Howard (1946), Wetmore (1956), Hamon (1959), Olson and Rasmussen (2001), Bedetti and Pavia (2013), Clements et al. (2017) and Michailidis et al. (2018).
