Taxonomy
Anas nigra was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant. Its type specimen is 1. It is the type species of Oidemia.

It was recombined as Oidemia nigra by Hay (1930); it was recombined as Melanitta nigra by Olson and Rasmussen (2001) and Clements et al. (2017).
