Megalomphala was named by Ulrich and Scofield (1897) [Sepkoski's age data: O Llvi-l D Fame Sepkoski's reference number: 362]. It is not extant.

It was reranked as Bellerophon (Megalomphala) by Perner (1903).

It was assigned to Bucaniidae by Ulrich and Scofield (1897); to Bellerophon by Perner (1903); to Bucaniides by Knight et al. (1960); to Bucaniinae by Koken and Perner (1925) and Peel (1991); and to Bellerophontida by Sepkoski (2002).
