Taxonomy
Ortalis was named by Merrem (1786). It is extant. Its type is Ortalis motmot.
It was assigned to Penelopinae by Hay (1930) and Wetmore (1940); to Ortalisinae by del Hoyo et al. (2014); and to Cracidae by Lambrecht (1933), Wetmore (1933), Miller (1944), Wetmore (1956), Olson and Rasmussen (2001) and Clements et al. (2017).
