Hippopotamus lemerlei
Taxonomy
Hippopotamus lemerlei was named by Milne Edwards (1868) [attributed to Grandidier in Milne Edwards]. Its type specimen is Lectotype MNHNIP 1414(1911-12), a skull (skull and mandible), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Ambolisatra, which is in a Holocene terrestrial horizon in Madagascar.
It was replaced with Hippopotamus madagascariensis by Guldberg (1883).
