Taxonomy
Plectonotus was named by Clarke (1899) [Sepkoski's age data: S Ldov-l D Eife Sepkoski's reference number: 362,797,1196]. Its type is Plectonotus derbyi. It is the type genus of Plectonotinae.

It was reranked as Bellerophon (Plectonotus) by Williams and Breger (1916); it was reranked as Bucanella (Plectonotus) by Knight et al. (1960).

It was assigned to Bellerophon by Williams and Breger (1916); to Bucaniellinae by Koken and Perner (1925); to Bucanella by Knight et al. (1960); to Bucaniinae by Horný (1963); to Bellerophontida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Plectonotinae by Boucot and Yochelson (1966), Wahlman (1992) and Bouchet et al. (2005).
