Lymnaea was named by Lamarck (1799). It is extant.

It was assigned to Gastropoda by Noulet (1845), Michaud (1855) and Sandberger (1875); to Lymnaeinae by Shoshani et al. (1989); and to Lymnaeidae by Oostingh (1935), Lozouet et al. (2001), Binder (2004) and Harzhauser and Neubauer (2018).
