Stachella was named by Waagen (1880) [Sepkoski's age data: P Leon-u Tr Olen-l Sepkoski's reference number: 110,1130]. Its type is Stachella bifrons.

It was assigned to Bellerophontidae by Ulrich and Scofield (1897); to Euphemitinae by Knight et al. (1960); to Euphemitidae by HornĂ½ (1963); and to Bellerophontida by Sepkoski (2002).
