Cellana was named by Adams (1869) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 530,909]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Nacellidae by Lindberg and Hickman (1986); to Patellidae by Ladd (1966), Kensley (1972), Short and Potter (1987) and Wilson (1993); and to Patellogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002).
