Umbilia capricornica was named by Lorenz (1989) [TYPE LOCALITY: Swan Reef, Capricorn Channel, off Lady Musgrave Island, Queensland, Australia. Recent]. It is extant. Its type specimen is HNC 22453.

It was recombined as Umbilia (Umbilia) capricornica by Darragh (2002).
