Taxonomy
Metoptoma was named by Phillips (1836) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise P Dora Sepkoski's reference number: 797,1130]. It is the type genus of Metoptomatidae.

It was reranked as Tryblidium (Metoptoma) by Cresswell (1893).

It was assigned to Tryblidium by Cresswell (1893); to Patellogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Metoptomatidae by Knight et al. (1960) and Bouchet et al. (2005).
