Patella was named by Linnaeus (1758) [Sepkoski's age data: K Albi R]. It is extant. Its type is Patella vulgata.
It was assigned to Gastropoda by Helbling (1779); to Patellinae by Knight et al. (1960) and Pacaud and Le Renard (1995); to Patellogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Patellidae by Ladd (1966), Kase (1984), Kensley and Pether (1986), Wilson (1993), van den Hoek Ostende et al. (2002) and Bouchet et al. (2005).
