Taxonomy
Elongatoolithus excellens was named by Mikhailov (1994). It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type specimen is PIN 522-402, an egg, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Tsagan Hushu [MPE/SMGE] (PIN coll. 552), which is in a Maastrichtian terrestrial siliciclastic in the Nemegt Formation of Mongolia.

K. E. Mikhailov 1994Smallest known eggs of Elongatoolithus: (90–110) x 40 mm. Rippled pattern ("norm") resembling that of E. sigillarius predominating in equatorial part of egg, but striated pattern showing in places. Eggshell thin: predominant thickness (in equatorial region of egg) 0.4–0.7 mm; total range 0.3–0.9 mm (sculpture slightly manifested in relief).
