Belemnopsis aucklandicus was named by Hochstetter (1863) [TYPE LOCALITY: Waikato South Head, Port Waikato, New Zealand (Ohauan: Tithonian). TYPE REPOSITORY: Natural History Museum, Vienna.].

It was corrected as Belemnopsis aucklandica by Marwick (1953).
