Taxonomy
Astropecten pewei was named by Miller and Unklesbay (1943). It is not extant. Its type specimen is State University of Iowa, Holotype SUI 2149. It is the type species of Eokainaster.

It was recombined as Archastropecten pewei by Hess (1955); it was recombined as Eokainaster pewei by Blake (1981).
