Ormistonella was named by De Wever and Caridroit (1984) [Sepkoski's age data: P Guad]. Its type is Ormistonella robusta. It is the type genus of Ormistonellidae.
It was assigned to Spumellaria by Sepkoski (2002); and to Ormistonellidae by De Wever et al. (2001) and Noble et al. (2017).
