Polyfistula was named by Nazarov and Ormiston (1984) [Sepkoski's age data: P l P Leon Sepkoski's reference number: 546,ZR86]. Its type is Polyfistula longiquitas.

It was assigned to Spumellaria by Sepkoski (2002); and to Ormistonellidae by De Wever et al. (2001) and Noble et al. (2017).
