Taxonomy
Asterias poritoides was named by Desmoulins (1832). It is not extant. Its type specimen is Not sorted, Museum of Bordeaux.

It was recombined as Crenaster poritoides by d'Orbigny (1850), Tournouër (1869), Tournouër (1875) and Noetling (1885); it was recombined as Astropecten poritoides by Dujardin and Hupé (1862), di Rovasenda (1892), Sacco (1893), del Prato (1896) and von Linstow (1909); it was recombined as Teichaster poritoides by Valette (1925), Valette (1925) and Hess (1955); it was recombined as Crateraster poritoides by Breton and Vizcaïno (1997).

G. Breton and D. Vizcaïno 1997Marginal plates of large size. Profile rectangular. External face with an adradial side flat forming a rounded angle with the abradial side. Ornament of well-imprinted dense granule pits, generally larger on adradial side. Internal face concave. Adradial face with a convace internal face and two faces of articulation with abactinal or actinolateral plates.
