Planitrochus was named by Perner (1903) [Sepkoski's age data: S Ludl D Emsi Sepkoski's reference number: 797]. It is not extant. Its type is Planitrochus amicus. It is the type genus of Planitrochidae.
It was assigned to Euomphalina by Sepkoski (2002); and to Planitrochidae by Knight et al. (1960) and Bouchet et al. (2005).
