Scalites was named by Emmons (1842) [Sepkoski's age data: O Llde Sepkoski's reference number: 157]. It is not extant. Its type is Scalites angulatus.

It was reranked as Pleurotomaria (Scalites) by Meek (1873).

It was assigned to Pleurotomaria by Meek (1873); to Raphistomatinae by Knight et al. (1960); to Raphistomidae by Wagner (1999); and to Euomphalina by Sepkoski (2002).
