Phocidaster grandis was named by Spencer (1913). It is not extant. Its type specimen is Geological Survey, 26695. It is the type species of Phocidaster.

C. W. Wright and E.V. Wright 1940Bulbous marginal of great height, bilaterally symmetrical, with a profile like that of Pycinaster, ornamented with fine shallow spine-pits between small rugosities. The main articular faces are distinctly concave. The ossicles known were probably single prominent superomarginalia in the centre of each interradial arc.
