Acanthonema was named by Sherzer and Grabau (1910) [Sepkoski's age data: D Eife Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. Its type is Acanthonema holopiforme.

It was assigned to Acanthonematinae by Wenz (1938); to Turritellidae by Knight et al. (1960); to Archaeogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); to Acanthonematidae by Bouchet et al. (2005); and to Euomphalidae by Wagner (2017).
