Natica pedernalis was named by Roemer (1852) [TYPE LOCALITY: Near Arivechi, Sonora, western Mexico (Middle Albian: Early Cretaceous). TYPE HISTORY: By original designation (Gabb 1877).]. It is the type species of Prisconatica.
It was recombined as Lunatia pedernalis by Gabb (1869) and Gabb (1869); it was recombined as Prisconatica pedernalis by Squires and Saul (2004).
