Turritella petersoni was named by Merriam (1941) [TYPE LOCALITY: Coulsa County, California (Cenomanian-Early Turonian). TYPE REPOSITORY: CAS, California.]. Its type specimen is CAS 1291.06, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is CAS Loc. 1291, Peterson Ranch, which is in a Cenomanian offshore shale in the Antelope Formation of California.
