Turritella encina was named by Squires and Saul (2006) [TYPE LOCALITY: LACMIP 10798 Redding Fm, Shasta County, California (Santonian). TYPE REPOSITORY: LACMIP, California.]. It is not a trace fossil. Its type locality is CIT loc. 1227, Oak Run, which is in a Santonian marine sandstone/conglomerate in the Redding Formation of California.
