Anatoma was named by Woodward (1859) [Sepkoski's age data: T Than-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 899]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Anatominae.

It was reranked as Scissurella (Anatoma) by Ladd (1966), Ladd (1972) and Ladd (1982).
