Brachyelasma was named by Lang et al. (1940).

It was synonymized subjectively with Streptelasma by Neuman (1969).

It was assigned to Streptelasmatinae by Hill (1956); to Streptelasmidae by Kaljo (1956); and to Streptelasmatidae by Kaljo (1958), Reiman (1958) and Merriam (1973).

C. W. Merriam 1973Trochoid-ceratoid solitary rugose corals lacking dissepiments and having subhorizontal, straight, or slightly arched tabulae, some of which are complete. Tabulae bent downward as they approach the wall. Major septa not meeting the axis, though commonly extending more than half that distance. Minor septa short. Septal stereozone narrow. A fossula recognizable in some species.
