Desmiophyllum was named by Lesquereux (1878). It is not extant. It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type is Desmiophyllum gracile.

It was assigned to Coniferales by Lakhanpal et al. (1976), Chandra and Tewari (1991) and Troncoso et al. (2000).
