Nucula exigua was named by Sowerby (1833) [DISTRIBUTION: California-Zorritos, Peru (Recent); California (Pleistocene).]. It is extant.
It was recombined as Nucula (Nucula) exigua by Grant, IV and Gale (1931), Keen (1971) and Woodring (1973); it was recombined as Nucula (Lamellinucula) exigua by Hertlein and Grant (1972), Moore (1983), Coan et al. (2000), Huber (2010), Coan and Valentich-Scott (2012) and Hendy (2021).
