Navicula tutamoensis was named by Marwick (1931) [TYPE LOCALITY: GS 1298, Ihungia Fm, Muddy Creeek, Tutamoe, East Coast, North Island, New Zealand (Lillburnian=Middle Miocene). TYPE REPOSITORY: NZGS (now GNS Science, Lower Hutt, New Zealand).].

It was recombined as Arca tutamoensis by Fleming (1966).
