Astele was named by Swainson (1855) [Sepkoski's age data: K Albi-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 615]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Trochidae by Ladd (1966), Ladd (1972) and Short and Potter (1987); to Calliostomatinae by Beu et al. (1990) and Wilson (1993); and to Archaeogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002).
