Calliotropis was named by Seguenza (1903) [Sepkoski's age data: T Plio R]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Callotrophinae.

It was assigned to Archaeogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); to Trochidae by Ladd (1982) and Kaim (2004); to Callotrophinae by Bouchet et al. (2005); to Calliotropidae by Bandel (2010); and to Eucyclidae by Ferrari (2014).
