Echinus lucunter was named by Linnaeus (1758) [HISTORY: For synonymy, see Mortensen 1943, p. 357. Type of Echinometra Gray 1825 [Kier 1992]]. It is extant.

It was recombined as Echinometra lucunter by Cooke (1941), De Buisonjé (1974), Kier (1992) and Donovan et al. (2005).
