Strombus oniscus was named by Linnaeaus (1767). It is extant.

It was recombined as Oniscia oniscus by Reeve (1849); it was recombined as Morum oniscus by Gabb (1881), Woodring et al. (1924), Clench and Abbott (1943) and Petuch (1994); it was recombined as Lambidium oniscus by Dall and Simpson (1901); it was recombined as Morum (Morum) oniscus by Rios (1980), Vokes and Vokes (1983) and Vokes (1998).
