Astropecten carthusiae was named by Hérenger (1944). Its type specimen is Laboratoire UJF-ID.11151, Laboratoire de Géologie, University of Grenoble and is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Archastropecten carthusiae by Hess (1955).
