Microdyromys hildebrandti was named by Werner (1994). Its type specimen is SMNS 44579/E-21 M1 sup. dext., a tooth, and it is not a trace fossil. Its type locality is Ulm-Westtangente, which is in a MN 2 terrestrial marl in Germany.
