Taxonomy
Catantostoma was named by Sandberger (1842) [Sepkoski's age data: D Eife D Give Sepkoski's reference number: 362]. Its type is Catantostoma clathratum. It is the type genus of Catantostomatinae.

It was assigned to Catantostomatinae by Wenz (1938) and Knight et al. (1960); to Selenimorpha by Heidelberger (2001); to Archaeogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Catantostomatidae by Bouchet et al. (2005).
